Our Story, Our Pride
Tongala's story begins with the Yorta Yorta people, the Traditional Owners of this land, whose connection to Country stretches back thousands of years. The town's name is believed to come from the Yorta Yorta word Dungala, meaning Murray River, reflecting the importance of the river to the region and its people.
Over generations, Tongala has grown into a proud rural community shaped by agriculture, resilience and a strong sense of belonging. It is also the place where Sir Doug Nicholls, one of Australia's most respected Aboriginal leaders, sportsmen and advocates for reconciliation, began his football journey. His legacy continues to inspire our community and reflects the values of respect, inclusion and opportunity that remain at the heart of Tongala today.

In 2022, Tongala was proudly recognised as Australia's Best Street Art Trail, reflecting our commitment to creativity, storytelling and public art.

Historic buildings, memorials and landmarks, including the nationally significant Light Horse Memorial, honour the people and events that have helped shape Tongala into the community it is today.
